Service Learning

Good computer literacy is one way for an individual to decrease their vulnerability to attack. This project focuses on providing underprivileged children with education in computer skills and computer literacy.

Plantersville Summer Academy is located in rural Plantersville, South Carolina. It is a summer camp for children grades K - 10 that provides children with an environment similar to school: they are in a classroom setting and study math, english, art, music, etc. They also go on field trips to industry sites almost daily.

I was the computer lab administrator for the program. I saw each grade for 30 minutes a day, and I worked on computer and math skills through educational software with each group. I also worked individually with students who needed any additional help. The format was largely self-paced, which motivated the students because they were able to take charge of their learning. Finally, I also helped conduct assessments on students' math and reading skills, and reported on students' progress to program stakeholders.
